Concept: To
refine and make improvements on earlier caricature pieces I did of the Rolling
Stones. New techniques were applied to create the varying skin
textures and tones. The background plays a more important role in this piece by
being more elaborate and directly linked to the main subjects.
The background features three Delta Blues legends that the Stones cite as their
musical influences. Starting from the left is Son House, an intense bluesman and
preacher, who was a musical pioneer and had a profound effect on the other two
gentlemen on the wall.
In the center is Robert Johnson, considered by many to be the most influential
bluesman of all time and primarily responsible for the shape of popular music
today. Robert Johnson was only 27 years old when he died of pneumonia
brought on by strychnine poisoning. Consequently, there are only two
pictures known to exist of him. It was a challenge and a pleasure to learn
about Robert Johnson and to render a new drawing of him.
Finally, the most well known name on the wall, Muddy Waters made history as the
dominant sound of the postwar blues. Waters' playing style was emulated by
such blues notables as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, and Magic Sam among
many others. The Stones chose their name from one of Muddy Waters' early
recordings, "Rollin' Stone".
