Swamp Thinker

Concept:  The thumbnail of Swamp Thing pictured here is one of the first pieces I ever attempted.  I wanted to work with extreme color and mixing paint with other elements.  While the end result is not too terrible, I thought I could improve on these ideas.

My new piece, titled "Swamp Thinker" takes the idea of mixing various materials with paint to new levels.  I used chopped dried flowers and shredded paper in the ground cover and on "Swampy's" body parts.

Notes:  Each mushroom part was soaked in water, dyed with color, and assembled.  In addition to a ground beetle, click beetle, and scarab beetle, there is a centipede with 42 individual legs.  The dragonfly has translucent wings with stippled veins, and it's eyes glow in the dark!  The frog was colored by airbrushing all white paper for each body part.    The roots, fingernails, mouth parts, and knuckles were all cut out and painted separately.

I also tried adding digital lettering taken from an original Swamp Thing comic book cover from the early 1970's.  This background is from my original art where I made a template of 96 different leaves for the details.  The leaf template was used dozens of times with different shades of color to get the finished effect.
